The Van Wezel gets a new chairperson as Michael Pender Jr. hands
over the gavel to Deane Allyn with Ernest Rice and Deborah Rohaty
looking

Dr. Robert Hueter, director of Mote Marine Laboratory’s Center for
Shark Research, has been named one of Florida’s most influential
people by
/Florida Trend/ magazine.

And the
competition gets stiffer. The sign on the left is for a new hydropool
store. The sign behind it announces that a new spa store will open
soon next door. Go figure.
Florida Trend published a list of the 174 most influential people
living in the state in this month’s issue. “In arriving at our list,
we
tried to cast our net more widely, across a range of disciplines and
activities,” wrote /Florida Trend/ in its cover story. “We looked both
for business heavy-hitters who can get the governor on the phone as
well
as for scientists whose work might be a yawn to most Floridians but is
hugely influential nationwide or internationally.”
As a shark scientist, Dr. Hueter’s work certainly isn’t in the “yawn”
category. He’s been interviewed by nearly every national news network
in
the country and quoted in nationally prominent newspapers and
magazines.
He is especially visible after shark attacks due to his vast knowledge
of shark science. Dr. Hueter’s current scientific focus is on
assessing
the population status of large coastal sharks in U.S. and Mexican
waters
and long-term studies of shark behavior and migration. Some of his
field
work includes tagging sharks in the Gulf of Mexico and Florida Keys
and
traveling to Mexico to study whale sharks. He has produced more than
100
scientific publications and has edited three books on shark biology.
Dr. Hueter, who came to Mote from the University of Florida as a
postdoctoral scientist in 1988, now runs a research center that
includes
nine Ph.D. scientists and seven staff biologists who work on about 40
different projects, making it the largest center for shark research in
the world. The center was designated as the nation’s “Center for Shark
Research” by the U.S. Congress in 1991, and today carries on the
science
that helped create Mote Marine Laboratory in 1955.
Mote, which began as the Cape Haze Marine Laboratory, was started by
Dr.
Eugenie Clark whose research was focused on shark science. Dr. Hueter
also holds the Perry W. Gilbert chair in shark research, named after
another former director of the Mote lab and a world-renowned shark
scientist.
Among his national and international affiliations, Dr. Hueter is one
of
just two academics named to a national panel that recommends
management
strategies for U.S. fisheries. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration’s Highly Migratory Species Advisory Panel advises on
ways
to manage fisheries for Atlantic tunas, swordfish and sharks. Dr.
Hueter
also has testified before Congress on shark conservation issues and
served as an expert consultant for aquarium design, educational
projects, for the dive industry and in legal cases.
